Fixit with Karen- the next video in the series focuses on bridging 10 to add which can be a stumbling block for learners with dyscalculia.
Bridging is a useful strategy to use when we want to add a single digit to another number. Learners with dyscalculia and maths difficulties can find this tricky often because to be able to use bridging, we need to know the number bonds for 10 and be able to decompose the numbers up to 10 – so knowing that 8 can be broken down into 5 and 3, or 4 and 4 etc. So it is important to work on number bonds for and to 10 before starting this bridging work.
In this video, we’ll look at adding a single digit by bridging across 10, using counters and an empty number line and will use a simple game to practise this. We’ll also see how this strategy can be used to add a single digit to any number, by bridging across the next multiple of 10.
